Recycling is a process to change (waste) materials into new products to prevent waste of potentially useful materials, reduce the consumption of fresh raw materials, reduce energy usage, reduce air pollution (from incineration) and water pollution (from landfilling) by reducing the need for "conventional" waste disposal, and lower greenhouse gas emissions as compared to plastic production. Recycling is a key component of modern waste reduction and is the third component of the "Reduce, Reuse and Recycle" waste hierarchy.
Handling discarded mattresses poses significant challenges. Their transportation costs are high, compacting them proves difficult, and they occupy substantial landfill space, potentially causing harm to incinerator processing equipment. Nevertheless, mattresses primarily consist of recyclable materials. When dismantled, over 75 percent of mattress components can be repurposed. This not only benefits the environment but also positively impacts the economy and municipal waste management budgets, making it a more sustainable approach overall.
Massachusetts disposes more than 600,000 mattresses and box springs each year. Effective November 1, 2022: Mattresses are banned from disposal or transport for disposal in Massachusetts, as per Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection MassDEP.
Statewide Mattress Recycling Mission:
Empowering businesses and nonprofits across the state, Statewide Mattress Recycling strives to make a positive impact on the environment and community. Our mission is to maximize the recyclability of discarded mattresses, with a commitment to repurposing at least 75% of their components. By doing so, we aim to create a ripple effect that benefits not just our clients but also the economy and waste management budgets.
Statewide Mattress Recycling Vision:
We envision a future where every discarded mattress is viewed as an opportunity, not a burden. Through innovative recycling techniques, Statewide Mattress Recycling aspires to raise awareness about the vast potential of mattress components that can be given a new life. Our vision is to set the standard for sustainable mattress management across the state, inspiring other industries to adopt eco-friendly practices.
